Our Story
Founded in 2014, the Duke Energy and Climate Club has provided educational, leadership, and professional development opportunities for undergraduates interested in energy, climate, and sustainability for over a decade.Â

Christina Zhang, Co-President
Christina is a senior from Vancouver, Canada, studying Statistics and Environmental Science and Policy. She focuses on international energy development, sustainable business systems, and early environmental education. In her spare time, she spends her time outdoors and loves exploring different art mediums (currently photography!)
Lola Castorina, Co-Director of Projects
Lola is a fourth-year undergraduate at Duke University from Los Angeles, California. She is majoring in Public Policy with a minor in Environmental Science, focusing on energy and environmental issues. For her Honors Thesis, she will examine how existing state policy frameworks shape the energy mix and emissions of large AI data centers. At Duke, Lola is involved in the Undergraduate Energy and Climate Club, Undergraduate Law Review, and Puppy Kindergarten. Outside of academics, she enjoys spending time outdoors and working with animals.
Dylan Linton, Co-Director of Projects
Dylan is a senior from London, England, studying Mechanical Engineering with a certificate in Energy and the Environment. He joined DECC in my freshman fall, and has since participated in three projects—twice as an analyst, and once as project manager. He has also completed three internships in the energy sector across asset management, performance engineering, and consulting. Within the energy industry, he is primarily interested in distributed energy resources (DERs), next-gen solar, and grid modernization. Outside of DECC, he is a campus tour guide and an exec member of Delta Sigma Pi. He also loves reading, running, pickleball, and is a veteran kville resident!
Scarlett Schwimmer, Co-Assistant Director of Projects
Scarlett is a rising junior majoring in Earth and Climate Sciences with a certificate in Energy and Environment. She joined DECC her freshman fall, and has been involved in multiple DECC projects throughout her time in the club. Her energy interests include geothermal, electricity markets, and global energy policy. Outside of DECC, she is involved with Duke Climate Scholars, Bass Connections, and Duke Climate Coalition. In her free time, she enjoys trying new restaurants, reading about history, and traveling!
Allen Wilk, Co-Assistant Director of Projects
Allen is passionate about developing technologies and economic affordability. He is driven to work on solutions that make clean energy more accessible, scalable, and impactful for communities all around the world. He likes to research the areas where finance and policy can work together to accelerate the energy transition. Outside of academics and professional interests, He also loves to snorkel, cook, and watch and play basketball. Let’s go Knicks!
Jack Fresina, Co-Director of Events
Jack is a senior from Greensboro, NC, studying Public Policy with a minor in Environmental Science. He is interested in promoting sustainable operations and facilitating the clean energy transition through effective policy and green finance. He has enjoyed being a part of three projects with DECC, working with organizations like NextEra and The Nature Conservancy. As a Green Devil, he helps facilitate the Sustainability Ambassadors program for first-year students to promote conversations and leadership in sustainability around campus. He also enjoys staying active, biking, and spending time in nature.
Zachary Whalen, Co-Director of Events
Zach is a sophomore from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, majoring in Economics and pursuing a Certificate in Energy & Environment. He is interested in tangible solutions to climate change, with a particular focus on clean energy development. Outside of DECC, he is an instructor for the Intro to Energy and Climate Ventures house course and serves on the executive team for Energy and Climate Ventures at Duke. In his free time, he leads climbing, backpacking, and canoeing trips as a Trip Leader for Duke Outdoor Adventures.
Pia Visaria, Co-Director of Events
Pia Visaria is a junior from Princeton Junction, New Jersey studying Economics and Energy with a minor in German. She is particularly interested in climate finance, grid infrastructure, and climate tech commercialization. Apart from DECC, she is involved with Duke Debate, Energy & Climate Ventures, and conducts research at the Planet Lab under Professor Brian McAdoo. In her free time, she enjoys travelling, reading memoirs, and trying new foods!
Kemi Diver, Co-Director of Professional Development
Kemi is passionate about advancing clean energy finance with particular interests in solar and storage assets. She loves traveling and has done Duke in Costa Rica, Duke in Madrid, and DukeEngage in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where she mapped extreme heat patterns and collected energy and stormwater infrastructure resilience data! Kemi is a native New Yorker who loves the outdoors, and you can find her playing basketball or skateboarding in her free time.
Whitney Grimes, Co-Director of Professional Development
Whitney Grimes is a junior from Annapolis, MD, studying Civil Engineering on the Environmental track. She also enjoys taking classes focused on renewable energy sources. She is particularly interested in the intersection between civil engineering and renewable energy expansion. She works in the Environmental Engineering Rockey Research Lab, identifying and studying fungi and their genetic traits. She is also involved in Duke’s Consulting Club and Design Climate program, where she has completed climate tech projects and studied climate tech investing. Outside of school, she loves spending time on the water, volunteering with animals, running, practicing yoga, and cooking!
Gabe LaCount, Co-Director of Alumni Affairs
Gabe is a rising senior at Duke University studying environmental and energy engineering. He is especially interested in expanding clean energy generation and strengthening the grid with flexible resources. This summer, he is interning at Constellation Energy on the renewables engineering team, and has past experience with Exelon and the Itaipu hydroelectric dam in Brazil. Besides energy, he enjoys nature photography, kayaking and running.
Parker Upton, Co-Director of Alumni Affairs
Parker is a Statistics major from South Florida with interests in data science and the energy sector. Outside of DECC, she is involved in econometrics research through the Duke Economic Analytics Laboratory and her sorority, Delta Gamma. When she’s not working, Parker loves reading comics and classics, hiking, baking brownies, and playing with her pet Labrador.
Belle Phang, Director of Finance
Belle is an engineering student at Duke University with interests in energy systems, climate innovation, and finance. She is fascinated by how emerging technologies move from research to real-world deployment, and how proper investment can accelerate the energy transition. At Duke, she is involved in climate, finance, and women-oriented communities, and currently serves as Director of Finance for DECC. Outside of school, Belle loves scuba diving, long nature walks, visiting museums, and spending time with animals (shoutout Duke Puppy Kindergarten!). She enjoys meeting people across all disciplines and is excited about building communities around energy and climate innovation.
Naina Bhardwaj, Co-Director of Membership
Born and brought up in Millburn, New Jersey, Naina is a rising sophomore majoring in Economics with a certificate in Energy and the Environment. She’s especially interested in the financing side of the energy transition, as well as nuclear energy and energy policy. Outside of DECC, Naina is also involved in the Duke Association for Business Oriented Women’s Consulting Committee, as well as the Dzialga Women in Finance Initiative. Some of her favorite hobbies include going to workout classes in Wilson gym, spending time outdoors, and hanging around animals.Â
Max Leubner, Co-Director of Membership
Max Leubner is a sophomore from Syracuse NY, studying Economics, Policy, and Energy. He was in the Global Energy Focus freshman program and has a strong interest in oil & gas markets and renewables. On campus, he is involved with Duke Scholars of Finance, Club Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and DCC/CRU. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, playing pickleball, and detailing cars.
Meena Puram, Director of Engagement
Meena Puram is a Sophomore from Cleveland, Ohio, studying Electrical and Computer Engineering and Creative Writing. She is passionate about environmental justice, global energy access, and innovative solutions to the climate crisis. Outside of DECC, she serves as an Opinion Staff Writer for the Duke Chronicle, an editor for The Archive Literary Magazine, and a barista at the Coffeehouse. In her free time, you can find her exploring the local arts scene, trying new recipes, or reading.
